The magic of winter

After the generous snow fall of the previous day (Friday), we woke up to an amazing Saturday morning. The initial temperature was icy cold at -15 degrees Celsius which eventually warmed up to around -5 degrees Celsius. The sky was blue with not a speck of cloud in it and the snow covered trees looked like they were decked in diamonds and glittered spectacularly from the sun rays.

Too bad that my husband had to leave very early in the morning and missed all the fun, off to tropical Jakarta where the temperature difference that would greet him was around 45 degrees Celsius. He was so sorry to leave and to be missing the much awaited snow but work commitment calls.

My daughter’s friend was by the door at 9am, ringing the door bell for the continuation of the fun in the snow from the previous day. There is no better day than this to enjoy the snow with the sun and blue sky altogether. This is cheap fun too! With the crisis that is currently besetting Europe these days, many have foregone the usual winter skiing holidays in the alps or in Scandinavia. Getting this generous heaping of snow brought that winter fun right at our doorstep so why not enjoy this wonderful days of snow and ice.

Nothing is more precious than to see pure happiness in my daughter’s face as she glided downhill on her sled over and over again. She hardly noticed the passing of the time till she was exhausted and ravenous from hunger.

    wow!!!

These are some amazing pictures! looks like the kids had a wonderful time in the snow. I remember as a kid, there wasn’t that many more things that were better than spending a whole day sliding and playing in the snow. great blog :)

    • Malou says:

Thanks a lot. I love to see them having fun outside than to be closeted inside the house in front of the TV or behind the computer. Real and simple fun like playing in the snow is a welcome treat this winter. ;-)

  3. Tracey says:

I knew you’d give in to the pull of the Sleigh ; ) Irresistible to both adults and children.

  4. Jess says:

Looks like where I live (but you have better architecture!). The frigid cold (we have been reaching -12 Fahrenheit regularly at dawn, but a warm winter in a place where -36 F. is not uncommon) brings such beauty, particulalry with beautiful sunny blue skies to drive away the gloom! Thank you.

    • Malou says:

So you are also experiencing this deep freeze. We almost gave up on ever having real winter this time but glad to finally have this winter wonderland.

I see that you are in the architecture business. The houses in our place were designed with various environmental friendly concepts.

      • randysrules says:

Yes, after a most beautiful and long Autumn, Winter was mild until January. We are now back to a normal Winter, too gloomy but blue sky days are so incredibly beautiful. Hopefully Winter is not simply pushed over into Spring! Off to Arizona for a week of sunshine soon, to escape the gloom and see that end of the Art world! All the best.

  8. Wonderful pics, you are so very talented. Kindest regards, Chrissie (in France!)

  9. Pretty pictures. I feel cold!! :)

  10. sugaredpecan says:

I love your pictures! The beautiful white, icy trees next to that beautiful blue sky. You have a great eye! It is lovely to see the children having so much fun.

  11. AK - Nomad says:

Winter is magical and these photos show it…absolutely wonderful! Your child will have great memories. I remember my snow playing days as a child with great fondness..and then later as an adult when the child within took over on snowy days.

    • Malou says:

You are absolutely right. I am just so glad that in the times we have now, it is easy to capture these wonderful memories which will later become valuable when the carefree days as a child are over. ;-)

  12. Those frost covered trees are beautiful! I always love your photo compositions, like how your daughter’s pink snow clothes stand out against all that white!

So pretty. I hope that it continues to stay that way!

    • Malou says:

Thanks a lot! We had a few more nice days of winter wonderland after this but this moment of frost covered trees was just for a day. I was happy to be able to capture some pictures. ;-)

  13. Cee Neuner says:

    Beautiful. Makes me miss snow!!!

  14. Nicolle says:

Great photos. They’ve provided me a little glimpse of the winter that Philly usually gets this time of year. But this year, it’s very mild. Yesterday, we did have a snow flurry but it didn’t stick. It’s crazy to compare this year with 2009 and 2010 when we were covered with more than 3 feet (or over 1 meter I believe) of snow on multiple occasions.

The things I love about snow are: snowball fights, snowmen and snowboarding :-)

Looks like you had a lot of fun :-)

    • Malou says:

Thanks a lot, Nicole. Did you not get enough snow this time? The winter here was also very mind with temps at double-digit Celsius till we got this cold snap that swept Europe for 2 weeks. Trees were even flowering already, the same with crocuses and some daffodils.

There are lots of things to enjoy when there is snow…too bad the snow here is not sticky enough (powdery because it is extremely cold) to create a snowman. Nonetheless , it was just fun for the kids to glide through it. ;-)

  15. I’m not much for winter and cold weather, but you captured some great photos that make me long for a walk in the snow.

    • Malou says:

Thanks a lot! Winter is fun with snow though there are also a lot of inconveniences that are a consequence of it…like chaos with traveling by public transport. ;-)

  16. Gilly Gee says:

Malou I think these are the nicest snow photos I’ve seen, you captures so much, the trees are beautiful and the delight of the children is tangible. Splendid, thanks for sharing!

  17. Beautiful shots! From the individual flakes clinging to branches, to the three on the sled, they are wonderful. Thanks for sharing with us!

  18. Reggie says:

Ohh, love these pictures, Malou! They are gorgeous! And the little ones look like they are having the best time ever!

  19. TBM says:

Love your photos!! Snow can be so much fun!

  20. Mary says:

Beautiful pictures! Do you know that I live in canada and we have had no significant snowfall here where I live? My daughter is dissapointed that she has not had the chance to go toboganning yet…. there is a chance of snow in the forecast tomorrow though so we shall see!

    • Malou says:

Oh, and I thought that in Canada, winters are always harsh with lots of snow. I hope you still get your winter wonderland. We almost gave up on it this year here in Holland when the temp would never even reach freezing point.

      • Mary says:

You would be right in thinking Canada usually has serious winter weather! Of course it gets worse the more north you go. I just wanted to tell you that it snowed about 3-4 cm yesterday so it is looking pretty and white outside today!

      • Malou says:

Glad to know that you had your snow wish was finally delivered. ;-)

Very beautiful. You’ve almost tempted me to live somewhere cooler. Note I said ALMOST!

    • Malou says:

Thanks a lot. I know the “ALMOST” part because winter is not all fun with snow. We also had to deal with traffic chaos here due to the snow for instance. ;-)

  31. Gorgeous! The frost is so beautiful.
