Chilly Easter egg hunt

The chill was unmistakable and the forecast was true to the dot that the temperature will not rise beyond 3 degrees Celsius but to the kids, that was no excuse to enjoy this year’s Easter egg hunt.

The whole adventure started with the egg painting that I organized at home last Saturday and punctually at 3pm, I have them at the door ringing the bell. It was fun to have all six of them — my Francesca, brothers Evan and Ilyaz, brothers Luuk and Job plus their soon to be three-year old sister Vera. Together at the table, they all took to the work at hand, painting the 40 hard boiled white eggs and showing off their creativity and artistry.

The Easter egg hunt was agreed to be at the same place as the previous year…at Soesterduinen. We love this place which is just a few kilometers away but is simply perfect for very energetic kids to run around as it is a wide expanse of sand dunes with sparse islands of pine trees that are perfect for climbing and also for hiding the Easter eggs.

We stayed in the usual place, a perfectly shaded area of several pine trees with branches that spread far and wide. The grown ups enjoyed the usual catch up conversations over everything — family, career, holidays, etc. while the little ones were crazily looking out for the eggs hidden all over.

It was a lot of fun save for the chilly wind that made the 3 degrees Celsius felt even far colder.

Adorable! What a cute easter bunny!!

  2. John says:

Glad a good time was had by all Malou! Curious to know what the sand area is? Seems like a dried up lake bed from long ago? Great place for the children to play.

    • Malou says:

Yes, we all had a great time, John. You are right to be curious about these sand dunes because there is no lake or sea nearby. These sand dunes were created by the last Ice age when the glaciers from Norway came down to as far as The Netherlands. When the glaciers retreated, some areas had these unusual landscapes where very little vegetation grows and the top soil has been eroded by wind action leaving only the sand with sparse pockets of heather and trees. ;-)

Looks’ like everybody having fun. Looks’ cold. Happy Ester.

Beautiful! What a full day of adventures, Malou…such wonderful memories for all of you to treasure. The location for the egg hunt is so dreamlike and the photographs are lovely. Thank you so much for this treat!

    • Malou says:

Thank you, Kitty. We truly enjoyed the day and it is funny to now have several years of history on how we spend Easter together with the neighbors. Time flies and these type of adventures will for sure will be taken over by other activities in the years to come but we will always have these happy memories to look back to. ;-)

Malou, in Spain we don’t use to have these kind of events, so for me it is very interesting to see it. I supposed it is more for little kids. The place is very amazing, it looks like a beach sand. As usual your photos are great. Congratulations.

I also did not grow up with this tradition in the Philippines, Maria. Over here in Holland, it is something that we started when Francesca was little and it has sort of became a regular activity every Easter. ;-)

  8. What a fun time! We had much warmer temps for our Easter celebrations, but we are getting our chilly weather this week! Looks like you had a wonderful time despite the cold. Beautiful pictures!

  10. What a wonderful multi-family outing, Malou…and so perfect for the children (who are all very good-looking, sturdy, hearty!). Such fun for you all, despite the weather! Thanks for this, as it brings back many memories of my sons, who would have loved this spot!

  11. Gorgeous Malou !! Love your little gang of egg painters and hunters :-)

Wonderful fun, did they get any chocolate?

  13. viveka says:

A| bit different to last years photo … one camper don’t look to happy .. I suppose he didn’t find so many eggs as they others. What a pity about the weather. Great shots .. and there were a lot of fun in them. We don’t have egg hunts neither. Or bunnies.
Thanks for sharing your day with me.

    • Malou says:

The cold weather wore off the egg hunters pretty quickly. How is the weather out there, Viveka? Sun is shining here now but still pretty cold. ;-)

      • viveka says:

Same here … sunny for a week now, but so chilly in the air – but the spring flowers are blooming, very tiny – but they are there … at my mums just now and they have still some snow, but the crocuses are blooming, so we are on the right track.

      • Malou says:

Crocus at this time are already long gone but with the chill, they are on extended stay. We would normally be seeing trees exploding with flowers and the narcissus blossoming all over but that’s still some weeks away by the current state of things.

      • viveka says:

Long gone .. ours came out this week. So you are a bit ahead of us. If you have a week to go … we have 3 weeks, hopefully we will have a freshly green 1st of May.
